Reflected in the blown glass ball
Bouncing off:
Narwhal
Green bird
Seahorse
Trumpeting angel
A goose not yet laying
Hand drawn shirt
Scarf swaddled bunny
Triple eyed Smokey bulb bauble
Tiny ancient bells
Mr. Mulligan
Lights lights lights
Is it bright where you are?
Here's hoping...

By degrees
And plus ten ain't nothin
Or something so remarkable
Except if you've always been here and remember
Drifts storms piles
Today a day of splashes
Mush and melting
Kids on the afternoon bus in t-shirts
Morning coffee at patio tables
In the sun
Basking
Recalibrating
Emotionally calculating
How to embrace the new normal
Or something so remarkable

Buoyancy
We're floating up
(The way I see it)
Higher and higher
Ensconced in our gleaming bubbles
And the higher we float
The more we can see:
The vast vastness beneath us
The only trouble is is that it's less
Tactile
And our olfactories are set to strike
Sure we can see it but what does that do to our reptile brains
That are all about sensing in ways yet unknown to us
I guess for now we meander on
In our transparent spheres
Somewhere between terra and sky
News of the world

Blooming
The orchid lives on the small orange table by the window
The cold window on a -20 day
It has footy rooty bits extending out
Embracing the room
It is watered every few days
Just enough to keep the moss springy
Another little frond is sprouting
Up from the base
Maybe the promise of more growth and future blooms
It was a housewarming gift that keeps on giving
...
Typing this (if one finger non dominant hand pecks are typing)
With a kitten on my lap
...
Blessed to be warm
Blessed to be home

Free Friday
Step right up (but not over
The person in front of you)
Into the land of flakes
Hundreds, thousands, millions of them
Each one a marvel in form/design
Melt on your tongue, scrunched in a hand
Rolled in a ball, mounding on walks and roadways
And it just keeps coming
Plenty for everybody
That's what we like to see
Melting hearts on a frozen day

Future selves
One day we'll all be sitting around a big table
Enjoying one another's company and reminiscing about
The good old days
How things used to be
We'll marvel at how time has passed so quickly and how much we've accomplished
In a very short time
We'll laugh and kid and shake our heads at how we used to do things until we found
Another way
And the bones of all the fossils will rest buried down below
Nestled
Undisturbed as the sun shines and the winds blow and we carry on with our days

Fibre optics
There are threads that run up through the centre of the earth
Through magma, lava and craters
That wind their way underground and find their way
To us
These threads are slippery
Slinky and dexterous
Instinctive in ways of wending
They traverse ranges and aquifers
Bedrock and boulders
Shields and plains
Through corns and calluses
Arteries and veins
Muscle and tendon
Cynicism and sinew
Retinas and plasma
The threads wend and wind
Up somewhere
Knotted
Bound
Wound
My thread is gently tugging
Pulling me into dreams

Coming home today
(Late afternoon but already tonight)
A number of houses were lit up with strings
Bulbs...blue...white...red and other colours
And I found myself thinking really...?
Already?
But I guess for some people it starts now
It's time to switch on spark up and get busy
like eating sugar coated cereal and wanting to jump on the furniture
One of the few (visible) scars I have is on the bridge of my nose
I don't remember getting it but was told
It was from jumping on the bed and crashing on the headboard
I was that kid who ruined it for everybody
So yeah, I guess go ahead: flip that switch
Spark up the hood
And light up
Tomorrow's another day
Under the sun

Unruts
Sometimes when stuck
It helps to remember that this is only a temporary situation
That however frustrating
Exasperating
Perspiration
It is sure to pass
And sometimes endeavours to get unstuck are counterproductive
Digging you that much deeper
Helpful actions include laundry
Walks
Trash (in various glorious forms)
Shaking of hands, wiggling of fingers
Images of baby hands ensconced in mittens
Bound for now but soon to be unleashed
Rampant

Wonder
I wonder where you are right now
Where you are and who you are
Reading this right now
Are you at home in a comfy chair?
Or at a desk or the kitchen table
Or maybe riding a bus or the subway
Standing in line to pay for your groceries
Has it been a good day or is it just beginning?
Maybe you're not out of bed yet
Or about to fall asleep
I wonder how you spend your days
And what you think about when your mind has time to wander
I wonder if you (like me) feel hopeful for the future
But sometimes worry too about how things are going
And where we are headed and what we can do
To get going and keep going
In a good direction
And maybe sometimes take comfort in little things
Like the first snowfall
Mittens

Buds
I've always wondered what it looks like to a doctor when they shine that light in your ears
Looking down into your ear canal and maybe
Out the other side
So when the resident doctor (in training) said 'looks like a blockage'
All kinds of possibilities unfolded
The treatment was swooshing water injected by a syringe
Unsettling but not unpleasant
And finally a little 'clink' of dislodged wax
The size of a small pebble
I asked to see it and wished I'd asked to keep it
Embedded with songs,whispers, secrets
Eustachian vibrations

Spray it
Sometimes the first snowfall of the year
Isn't light and fluffy like candy floss
Or cotton wool
Sometimes it's wet and clumpy
Like old school Make It Snow
The kind in the can that you
(Or more likely your parents)
Would spray on the artificial Christmas Tree
Which was pretty similar conceptually
To aerosol cheese
(At least as I imagine it to be)
That's us today:
Slathered in a sheen of mozzarella
The airborne kind

All in good time
All will be revealed
Like some traveling conjurer
A magician at a kiddie's birthday party
Only this time it's a tropical spider
A wandering Brazilian among a bunch of bananas
Instead of a rabbit out of a hat
(Same old, same old)
The wandering Brazilian tearing off one of its own legs
When cornered
What we've come to expect
To demand
A little more drama in the diorama
A little more bang for our buck
Our dineros
And just so you know
Here, north of the 49th we call them 'loonies'
In honour of the birds that grace the tail side
The tailored pursuits
Diving down
Fists of cash
Fits of crazy
Delirium and the wandering Brazilian
Likely just looking for home

Polar kinder
Thanksgiving is about many things
Time to recall the past
Anticipate the future
And be mindful of the present
To connect with family and dress up a little
To eat too much
And at the end of the meal to unwrap kinder eggs
Mine this year contained a small white
Ursus Maritimus
Timely and thankfully easy to assemble
Part of the Natoons series
Featuring penguins, moose, wolves, walruses, seals, huskies
And maybe an otter (not sure)
As I struggle with how to say and what to say about all that is melting
My little plastic polar bear waits patiently on top of the thermal coffee urn
Wondering what's coming
When the ice will return
And when help will arrive
And in case we don't remember
Polar bears don't drink Coke
Or coffee

Between the African violet
And the empty pickle jar
Is a cake plate beneath the overhanging cupboard
Connected by a spider skein illuminated in sunlight
Octopi
Occupy
All those limbs in action
I like to think of the spiders hunkering down
Getting busy with all of the work
Yet to be done
Yet to be spun

Under the collar
Things are getting a little hot around here
Or is it just me?
Oh no, good
Good to know I'm not alone
And I see you there in your trunks and floatation board
Waiting patiently for the rising tide
Your emissions are truly impressive
Mammoth even
(in the ways that mammoths were gigantic and woolly)
You just keep on keepin' on and we'll figure out a way forward
Shooting little sulphur mirrors into the skies to reflect it all out again
Dive in!
No time like the present

Organic earl grey tea bag

Grooming remnants best left unitemized
Clumping kitty litter in impressively sized clumps
Recycling hodgepodge
Oversized pizza box
Veggie stock past the expiry date
Disappointing banana loaf
Try try again

Synapses
The big board display for random passers by
Emits a signal
The 'trouble light' is flashing
Amid many options
But no one seems to notice
All gettin on with gettin on
Oblivioso
And really...what else is there?
Left right left right left
All that's left in the box
Once Pandora has shuffled offstage
Off to Buffalo
Sidle up
Carve up
A little hope with me

Sniffling
Some days it just works out best
To sit down and have a really good cry
The kind that has you slobbering up
Bubbles coming out of your nose
No tissues in sight
The kind that wells up from the bottom of your shoes
Boots...rubber boots
Gummed and heavy from a slog in the rain
Or maybe the quiet kind of slobbering that wells up from nowhere
Catching you by surprise on the sidewalk
On a hot sunny day
Passing the open door to a shop playing a song that you love
But haven't heard for years
And it makes you tear up but in a good kind of way
Welling up from a place you had nestled and packed away
Or in the moments after you hear the sound of a bird thumping
Colliding with the window in the room where you're sitting
Reading a book unable to help
Too late to jump up
To put your hands between wings
Feathers
Pane
To reach out and stop it
Become that membrane
To sit down and have a really good cry
The kind that has you slobbering up
Bubbles coming out of your nose
No tissues in sight

Surgin Sturgeons
Diving down into the Yangtze
Can you hear me?
I'm swimming with thunder
Hoping to rouse you
Rumble you
If I could turn back time
I'd be Cher but I'm not
140million years is a little
past my bedtime
But I hope to always see you in the stories
The happy ones to set us off to sleep
The ones that say
swim swim swim away
And all will be bright in the morning
This is dank
But I think sure
Why not?
The little chumpers are up for it
And it all will be brighter in the morning

Castor sugar
Years ago
I worked in a bookstore
A big bookstore on a university campus
They sold lots of books
Textbooks mostly
But lots of other books and things
And every so often one of the customers
One of the students would ask questions about the bookstore
About where to find a book
Or about the return policy
Or something
But instead of referring to it as the bookstore
They would call it the library
And I remember thinking that I wanted to tell them
That there were lots of differences between a bookstore and a library
Like in one you had to pay for your books but in another they were free
And I've always kind of loved it
When people are referring to the library and they say
Liberry

Ash
Sneezing in the summer sun
Bright light brings it on
Crisp days cooler nights
And breezy poplar stands
The bite in the air
Keep weaving wee spiders
And jumpers too
Spinning wielding
Magic in the skeins
A little while longer
We still have our tales to tell

In the air the crispness the bite
The ting
In the angle of the sun
The creamy afternoon dream
It's in the memory of squinting August days
Churning into evening
Churning into night
It's when we last met
had a chance to be
Palms to palms
Heart to heart
Threading you

Closing my eyes
Making a wish
And blowing your nest
A little further afield
Where you can come and go
Where we can come and go
And sometimes meet
Without harm
To winged ones
Or bipeds
Just hangin
In the summer sun
Making a wish
And blowing your nest

If I could felt anything
I would felt a wave
To wash down and all around
All over us
The smell of tangy lambs
Gambolling in tall grasses
Little beach glass pebbles between our toes
Knitted in a basketball
Knitted in dreams

last night muddled dreams
Tossing and turning
Seeking pockets

Tonight a little less balmy

A little more cool
kneading
A few more kittens

Fanning
By degrees we are all
Melting
Just a little
Around the edges
Near the borders and the tactile
Centres
We nod a bit more slowly
And shuffle along
From shade to shade
Bees buzzing on the sea holly
As they prepare to ship out
Come fly away
Hovering hearts
And a brave new world
Melting
Just a little
Around the edges
Near the borders and the tactile
Centres
We nod a bit more slowly
And shuffle along
From shade to shade
Bees buzzing on the sea holly
As they prepare to ship out
Come fly away
Hovering hearts
And a brave new world

Catnip
Not quite the dog days
Yet
But lounging all the same
In the tall grasses
The bishop's weed
In lazy late afternoon dreams
A black cat comes to visit
And piss a little patch
A soggy calling card to be collected
Redeemed another day
By degrees warmer
Brighter
Ebbing
Whatever you're carrying
Lay it down
Let it rest
Empty palms hand in hand
Take up visions
Dreams
New tomorrows
Yet
But lounging all the same
In the tall grasses
The bishop's weed
In lazy late afternoon dreams
A black cat comes to visit
And piss a little patch

Redeemed another day

and there are days
there are days on the big blue ball
when things feel too heavy
the weight of a heart is a lumbering thing
too much to drag around
under overcast skies and news
of the world
time to breathe
to step back and recalibrate
carve out pathways
means of measuring
what it is to be
with each other
how to be at peace
in solidarity
on the big blue ball
when things feel too heavy
the weight of a heart is a lumbering thing

where there's smoke...
ochre glow
haze and ash
is this the new normal?
apocalypso
i don't think i can dance
to this tune

suds
the wash is sloshing
over cups saucers
bowls of all sizes
the tummy is sloshing
green curry
white grapes
coconut rice
bowed
tied in thai
an 'aloha lily' awaiting delivery
a gift of green
(this is what miniature purple pineapples look like)
a world away anxiety
chaos
rubble
soon to sleep
to dream of peace
and wash the divisions
away

Sunny Saturday
Waking up to rain water on dried roses
Cork floor
Shelves, hutches
Towels and swabbing
Laddering rooftop
Mugo pine needles mucked out
From under
Detours and plush owl enroute
The birthday baby nestled in cake
Cake! Bathed in cake
Yum
Gracie:
The dog who snagged a wiener
A lone wisher escorting us back
The spine of 16
One day we will tell you how it was
To come and celebrate with you
The joy of being
One

Forehead forehead
We will pull out that drawer
Just a little bit further
Just a little bit wider
So you can nestle
Hunker down
Whiskers into woollens
Nosing into sweaters
Folded
Inhaled
Taken in
And out
Again
Kneel in
Pad down
And whisper on
All your sweet secrets to me
Just a little bit further
Just a little bit wider
So you can nestle

Daisy Daisy
The shastas are booming intent on taking over
Petals pedalling all over the place
Sprinkling north
Wisping south
Eeking out east
A full on assault in the west
This is the new way
Where we're headed now
Sun wind panels and bines
Let those bones rest in peace
Faces to the future
Where we're headed now
Petals pedalling all over the place
Sprinkling north
Wisping south
Eeking out east
A full on assault in the west
This is the new way
Where we're headed now

This way
And I think in time in this way
It will become new again
After enough time has passed
After enough drops have fallen
After enough notes have been subscribed and tendered down
From fingertips to strings and back
Again
It will flow and ebb and crest and surge
Puddles of wishes lapping at our rubber shores
No I know it
No but yeah
Don't you feel it?
The tides are turning
The pavement is burning
And we are all well
Welling
Swell and welling
On a new road
It will become new again
After enough time has passed
After enough drops have fallen
After enough notes have been subscribed and tendered down
From fingertips to strings and back
Again
It will flow and ebb and crest and surge
Puddles of wishes lapping at our rubber shores

Due north
44 and 45th
Scampering
Noted
Heading down on 47th
Seems counter intuitive somehow
Going downhill but headed north
Upstream
Downstream
After a few pleasant mojitos
Slipstream
Cutting the crusts off cucumber sarnies
And fast tracking them into tall glasses
Tall grasses
The worms have their ears underground
Dig down
Make way
The thrushes are prancing dancing
Thrashing this way
The 53rd parallel and beyond

Coda
And i would want to nestle
My face my nose
The tip and top
Of my being into that blossom
And drink it in
Inhaling the tap dance
The lighting strike
The ozone of it all
My face my nose
The tip and top
Of my being into that blossom
And drink it in
Inhaling the tap dance
The lighting strike
The ozone of it all
Peonies
If you and me were in my dream
But not my dream
Just running down a street
One familiar not named
Not known but recognized on some level
And we kept on running
Step by step by step
Until we could run no more
And we fell upon a bed of pedals
Peonies
Bursting blossoms
A defiant riot of blooms
They swallowed us
Knees
Elbows
Whole
And kept on munching
Until the robins came
Cheerio cheerio
Cheep cheep
Wake up dreamer
Dream another day
Get back to work
But not my dream
Just running down a street
One familiar not named
Not known but recognized on some level
And we kept on running

nails by terra
soiled cuticles and tips
mauve gloves dig in
make room for
the newly nestled:
sugar daddies
midnight cowboy (single)
abutilon (single)
heliotrope
portulaca
verbena
a trio of pansies...
the geraniums
dusty millers and marigolds
will have to wait
threatening skies
just in time
bring it
bring it on
you're soaking in it

sea butterflies
come
dive down
deep down
and swim with them
swaddle their shells
and web their wings
turn the tide
recalculate the sea
melt into now
melt into the future
put the fly
in butterfly
let's find another way
dive down

shoots
the bamboo on the ash
restless in the wind
under heavy skies that hold back
come on!
let loose
let loose your drops
shake em down
bless us here
bless us down
a little less dirt
a little more rain
in the heart of dirt city
restless in the wind
under heavy skies that hold back
come on!

Kickin tin
The substance of nails
Hair maybe skin
The folly of follicles
What are we thinking?
Maybe not you and me but someone
Weighing what it is to be
Nailing down the nails
In my dreams I erode them
Weigh them down
Tip to tip to tip
And then we all rest for awhile
Horns and tips
Frosted tips
Better cuts under the setting sun

two lips
are pressing up from
down under
eager to rise and get going
little fronds tentacles
green fingers telling us it's time
wee bulbs
shots of dutch courage
and all that blooms on the inside
little petals
little shrines
little lips
puckering
x marks the spot

Walkies
When out strolling along
Nestled in rubber Hunters
Defiant of puddles and all things
mud
Be prepared to be assaulted
In the alley
Through the panes
Territorial canines ready to pounce
Or, at least give you
What For!
Offa my street
Bipedaler
Keep on movin

Westerlies
The wind is kissing the bamboo chimes
All nuzzles and rhythmic whispers
A wave of snow still blankets the yard
The other day, a butterfly
Defiant and flittering
Close your eyes
Listen
The boughs are buoyant
The limbs are restless
Knocking down the doors connecting heart chambers
A little coil of spring
All nuzzles and rhythmic whispers
A wave of snow still blankets the yard
The other day, a butterfly
Defiant and flittering
Close your eyes

thinking that the gold dust silkening dust is maybe
not for me
but thanks all the same
i have my potions
my jams

Rx marks the spot
one day i'll have figured it out
how to ease and soothe
how to slough off the bits of mortal coil
that no longer cling
until then i'll keep on

skipping stones
and so you begin the process
threading shedding
skipping stones
how it all works to unearth and strip away
what has come
gone before
the light peels away
the bark and barking
a hush to what shout out
drowned the whispers
a thread wound around fingertips
yarn to self
knitting the chambers
done
undone

Come again and bring your friends
There you are again
The two of you:
Barely an 'ear-full'
The duo 'museum'
Peaked peaks
Yolk tipped tails
Bellies full of ash berries
Keep on coming again
And again and again
Be sure to tell your friends
We need them now
More than ever
The caps are melting
Peak your peaks
Message your peeps
Calling all comrades
Light up your wings

But in a good way

I'm all blistery inside

Trills and thrills
And now they are gone
Returned to the ether
Over the branches the fence
Beyond the breeze
Waxwings
Lighting up the Mountain Ash
Feasting on berries
In flight
On ground
Twittering
Flittering
A band of Bohemians
Tip flips and yellow tails
Off again
A trill
A museum
See you in memory
See you in dreams
See you at the museum
Returned to the ether

Giving way

Snow is giving way to puddles
Gusts are giving way to breezes
Night is giving way to day
Parkas are giving way to windcheaters
Heaviness is giving way to light

Swaddling
There is this big sheath of gauze
That I'm spinning under my wing
Right now
Threading weaving knitting
Under brow
It's coming together like a well spoken tale
Told in hushed breath
Feathery whispers
And when it is done this dewey duvet
I am going to fly around late at night
Early morning before dawn
And swaddle us all in the quiet comfort
That comes with sleep
Basted in drool
That I'm spinning under my wing
Right now
Threading weaving knitting
Under brow
It's coming together like a well spoken tale
Told in hushed breath
Feathery whispers
And when it is done this dewey duvet

Tater tucking
Smoothing the kiwi fur
Polishing the Granny Smiths
Tweaking the navels of the Navels
Rustling the paper on the garlic bulbs
Chuffing and sloughing the brussel sprouts
Trimming the fronds on the leeks
And at the end of a long day
Turning to night
Nestling the Yukon Golds, the wee rubies
And russets to bed under burlap
Sleep tight tater tots
Polishing the Granny Smiths
Tweaking the navels of the Navels
Rustling the paper on the garlic bulbs
Chuffing and sloughing the brussel sprouts
Trimming the fronds on the leeks
And at the end of a long day
Turning to night
Nestling the Yukon Golds, the wee rubies
And russets to bed under burlap
Sleep tight tater tots
the white rhino
the image of you is burned in my heart
hacked attacked bleeding
stumbling weaving
a bullet in your brain
and all for what?
a horn
the substance of finger nails
who did this to you?
who held the blade?
who pulled the trigger?
with those same hands
do they hold their children?
for mercy's sake you were put down
an end to the suffering
damn the acts
damn the trade
an end to the madness
leave the gentle giants in peace
hacked attacked bleeding
stumbling weaving
a bullet in your brain
and all for what?

Fluff
Lifting pillows from my lids
And preparing to slip into cloud shoes
Heading out late in the afternoon
The crush of the cush
Under marshmallow skies
And tickled pines
Boughing

Heading out late in the afternoon

Museum of ghosts
They were here just yesterday
A lit and lighting up the sky
Flitting on the branches of the mountain ash
Beaks filled with bright red berries
Skittering flittering flying off
A cloud of waxwings ascending
Along the flight path
Feathers into ether
A museum of ghosts
Etched in memory

going in like a lamb
