and then...

over the last few weeks

you find yourself reminded

of why May is one of your favourite months

each day leaves filling out a little more

and a little more

and a little more

and after a long winter

so much green and the promise

of spring

but one tree in the neighbourhood remained brown

you kept watching and hoping that the leaves would turn

but nothing

and you begin thinking 'that's sad...such a lovely tree

but i guess it's time'

in the age of loss and extinction

just another something to have to let go of

until one day a glimpse

a sliver

a bit of colour

a shift and sure enough

sign of blossoms

it isn't gone after all

and maybe it wasn't even late in blooming

maybe it was you who needed a bit more patience

a bit more hope

a bit more faith

now and for

the future

fly by

out on a morning drive

across a bridge

spanning the river

you spot a bird

with a distinctive profile

perched high above

on a light stand

you wonder:

'wow! is that a kingfisher?'

and you pass by

realizing you could never

be sure

but then almost

instantly lean into the affirmative

of a spectacular sighting

'yes: definitely...that was a kingfisher'

May days

and slowly but surely

a little more sun

a little more unfolding

leaves on trees

a little fuller

with each passing day

spring's promise

of summer

vantage point

among the many coniferous trees

in our neighbourhood

one is my favourite

it is not the tallest tree

nor the fullest tree

and in spaces it is sparse

its branches uneven

but it is the treetop that magpies

often choose to land on

and i think

that if i were a magpie

it would be my perch choice

too
